Botox vs Dysport: What’s the Difference and Which One Is Right for You?
Botox and Dysport are two of the treatments patients ask us about most — usually followed immediately by the same question:
“Which one is better?”
The slightly frustrating answer is that neither is universally better.
Both are injectable neurotoxins designed to temporarily relax specific facial muscles that create expression lines. The better choice depends on the area being treated, your facial movement, your previous treatment history and the kind of result you’re looking for.
Here’s what you should actually know before choosing between them.
First: what do Botox and Dysport actually do?
Every time you smile, frown, squint or raise your eyebrows, certain muscles contract.
Over time, repeatedly folding the skin in the same places contributes to lines such as:
Forehead lines
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Crow’s feet around the eyes
Botox and Dysport temporarily reduce the movement of selected muscles so the overlying skin can appear smoother and lines are less heavily reinforced.
The goal at Newburyport Medical Aesthetics is not to erase your ability to make facial expressions.
It’s to soften the movements that are creating lines while keeping your face looking like your face.
That sits pretty comfortably with our whole philosophy: “Medically Minded. Naturally You.”
So what’s the difference?
Botox and Dysport contain different formulations of botulinum toxin type A.
They do essentially the same job but behave a little differently once injected.
Dysport tends to spread slightly more through the treatment area, which can make it particularly useful across broader areas in the right patient.
Botox tends to remain somewhat more localized, which can be helpful where very precise placement is wanted.
That doesn’t mean one is stronger or more effective.
It means an experienced injector has more than one tool available — and can select the one that makes the most sense for your anatomy.
Will one look more natural than the other?
Natural results have much more to do with how you are treated than which brand is used.
Your injector has to consider:
• Your natural facial expressions
• The strength of individual muscles
• Facial symmetry
• Previous injectable treatments
• Where your lines form
• How much movement you actually want to retain
Two people coming in asking for “forehead Botox” may need very different treatment plans.
That’s why we don’t believe in treating faces from a template.
How quickly will I see a difference?
Neurotoxins don’t work instantly.
Changes develop gradually after treatment and continue to settle over the following days.
We’ll explain the expected timeline during your appointment and tell you when we want you to assess your final result rather than judging it too early.
How long do results last?
Results are temporary.
How long they last varies from patient to patient depending on factors including metabolism, the area treated, muscle strength, dosage and how regularly you have treatment.
Some patients also notice that their treatment pattern changes over time as they learn what level of movement they prefer.
What if I’ve never had injectables before?
You absolutely do not need to arrive knowing whether you want Botox or Dysport.
That’s our job.
During your consultation we can look at your face at rest and in movement, talk about the areas bothering you and explain what we would recommend — including whether neurotoxin is actually the right treatment at all.
Sometimes a concern that looks like a “wrinkle problem” is actually better addressed with collagen stimulation, skin tightening or resurfacing.
A good consultation should give you options, not pressure you into a syringe.
