CO2 Laser Resurfacing: The Treatment to Start Planning Before Winter

Not every skin concern needs an aggressive treatment.

But sometimes patients aren't looking for a subtle refresh.

They want to address more noticeable texture, wrinkles, scarring or accumulated skin damage — and they're prepared for a treatment with more recovery in exchange for a more intensive approach.

That's when conversations around CO2 laser resurfacing can begin.

What is CO2 laser resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing uses carbon dioxide laser energy to precisely treat the skin.

Unlike gentler treatments that leave the surface largely untouched, CO2 resurfacing works by removing controlled portions of damaged surface skin while stimulating the healing and collagen-remodeling processes underneath.

It's an intentionally more intensive treatment.

That's also why patient selection, preparation and aftercare matter.

What can it treat?

Depending on your skin and treatment plan, CO2 laser resurfacing may be used to improve concerns including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scars

  • Uneven texture

  • Certain types of sun damage

  • General skin aging

  • Skin firmness

It's not something we automatically recommend simply because somebody wants “better skin.”

There are much gentler options available when the concern doesn't warrant significant resurfacing.

CO2 laser vs Laser Genesis

These two treatments sit at very different ends of the spectrum.

Laser Genesis is gentle, non-invasive and designed to gradually improve redness, texture, pores and early signs of aging with minimal downtime.

CO2 resurfacing is more intensive and involves deliberate resurfacing of the skin.

So if somebody asks which is “better,” they're really comparing two treatments designed for different jobs.

Sometimes the gentle option is exactly what you need.

Sometimes the concern calls for more.

CO2 laser vs RF microneedling

There's some overlap in the concerns patients want to treat — particularly texture, acne scars, wrinkles and collagen loss.

But the technologies work differently.

RF microneedling uses tiny needles and radiofrequency energy beneath the surface.

CO2 laser directly resurfaces the skin with laser energy.

Your skin type, concerns, downtime tolerance and previous treatments all influence which approach makes sense.

What's the downtime?

This is not the treatment to book two days before a wedding.

CO2 laser resurfacing requires real healing.

Your individual recovery will depend on the intensity of your treatment and your skin, and we'll explain exactly what to expect before anything is booked.

You may experience redness, swelling, peeling or crusting as the skin heals.

Following your aftercare instructions matters enormously.

So does sun protection.

Why do people start planning CO2 treatments in fall?

Sun exposure is a major consideration with resurfacing treatments.

That's why cooler months with less intense recreational sun exposure often fit more naturally into laser treatment plans.

Starting the conversation in September also gives us time to:

  • Assess your skin

  • Review your skincare

  • Prepare the skin if necessary

  • Choose the appropriate treatment

  • Plan recovery around your calendar

You don't need to decide on Monday that you want a CO2 laser and have it performed on Tuesday.

Good treatment planning is rarely that rushed.

Your skincare before and after matters

A professional treatment doesn't exist separately from what you do at home.

Depending on your skin and treatment, we may recommend adjusting active ingredients before resurfacing and using specific products to support the skin barrier during recovery.

We carry medical-grade skincare including ALASTIN, iS Clinical, Universkin and PCA and can build a routine around your treatment plan rather than leaving you to guess.

Is CO2 laser resurfacing right for everyone?

No.

Some patients are better suited to other treatments.

Your skin type, pigmentation risk, medical history, current products and goals all need to be considered.

This is exactly why the consultation matters.
