HydraFacial vs Dermaplaning: Which One Should You Book Before an Event?
Wedding.
Vacation.
Birthday.
Family photos.
Or maybe you just want your makeup to stop clinging to every dry patch like it has a personal vendetta.
When you want your skin looking better without major downtime, two treatments tend to come up quickly: HydraFacial and dermaplaning.
They’re both popular.
They can both leave skin looking smoother and fresher.
But they don't do the same thing.
Here’s how to work out which one belongs on your calendar.
What does a HydraFacial do?
HydraFacial is a multi-step treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration.
A specialized device is used to lift away dead skin and congestion while infusing the skin with hydrating and targeted serums.
Patients tend to love it because it tackles several of those annoying “my skin just looks a bit rubbish” problems in one appointment:
• Dehydration
• Congestion
• Dullness
• Rough texture
• Visible pores
• Lack of radiance
There’s little to no downtime, which makes it particularly popular when you want your skin looking fresh without doing something aggressive.
What does dermaplaning do?
Dermaplaning is physical exfoliation.
A sterile surgical blade is carefully passed over the surface of the skin to remove built-up dead skin cells and fine vellus hair — the soft “peach fuzz” on the face.
The result is an immediately smoother surface.
And yes, makeup tends to sit beautifully afterwards.
Dermaplaning is especially popular with patients whose main complaint is:
“My skin feels rough.”
“My foundation looks textured.”
“I hate the peach fuzz on my face.”
“I just want everything smoother.”
No, your hair does not grow back thicker
This myth refuses to die.
Dermaplaning does not change the structure of the hair follicle.
Removing fine vellus hair at skin level does not magically turn it into thick, dark terminal hair.
It will grow back according to its normal growth pattern.
You are not going to leave your facial and develop a beard two weeks later.
Which one gives more glow?
That depends on what’s stopping your skin from glowing in the first place.
If the problem is dehydration, congestion or overall dullness, HydraFacial may give you more of what you're looking for.
If surface texture, dead skin and peach fuzz are making the skin look flat, dermaplaning may make the bigger immediate difference.
And for some patients?
The answer isn't necessarily either/or.
Treatments can sometimes be strategically combined depending on your skin and the plan your provider recommends.
Which is better before an event?
Both can work well as pre-event treatments because neither generally requires the recovery associated with deeper resurfacing procedures.
But we still recommend not experimenting with a brand-new treatment the morning of your wedding.
Your skin deserves slightly more planning than that.
If you have an important date coming up, tell us.
We can recommend what to book and when to book it based on your skin, your previous treatment history and how much time we have.
What if I have acne or sensitive skin?
This is where scrolling TikTok becomes less useful than an actual consultation.
Active breakouts, significant irritation, certain medications and underlying skin conditions can change what we recommend.
The treatment your friend swears by may not be the treatment your skin needs.
That’s why we assess first.
Your facial should have a purpose
You shouldn't have to choose a treatment because its name sounds nicer.
If you want deep cleansing and hydration, say that.
If you want smoother makeup application, say that.
If you're fighting congestion, dryness, texture or dullness, tell us.
Once we know the goal, choosing the treatment becomes much easier.
