IPL vs Laser Genesis: Which Treatment Does Your Skin Actually Need?

Redness.

Sun spots.

Uneven tone.

Visible pores.

Fine lines.

When patients tell us they want their skin to look “better,” there are usually several different things going on at once.

That’s also why choosing a treatment based purely on something you saw on Instagram isn't always particularly helpful.

Two treatments that often come up are IPL and Laser Genesis.

They can both improve the overall appearance of the skin, but they work differently and are better suited to different concerns.

First: IPL and Laser Genesis aren't the same thing

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.

Rather than using one specific wavelength, IPL delivers broad-spectrum pulses of light that can be used to target visible pigment and vascular concerns within the skin.

Laser Genesis takes a different approach.

It uses near-infrared energy to gently heat deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin while gradually improving tone and texture.

In simple terms:

IPL is often chosen when visible pigmentation or vascular concerns are the priority.

Laser Genesis is often chosen when you want gradual improvement in redness, pores, texture and early signs of aging with very little downtime.

When might we recommend IPL?

IPL can be useful for concerns including:

  • Sun damage

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Brown spots

  • Redness

  • Rosacea-related visible redness

  • Certain visible blood vessels

  • General photoaging

September is also when many patients start noticing the evidence of their summer sun exposure.

That extra pigmentation might look like freckles, darker patches or an overall more uneven complexion.

Before treating it, though, we need to assess what the pigmentation actually is.

Not every brown mark should automatically be treated with light or laser energy.

What is Laser Genesis better for?

Laser Genesis is one of our gentler treatment options.

It can help improve:

  • Diffuse redness

  • Enlarged-looking pores

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven texture

  • Early skin aging

  • Overall skin quality

One of its biggest advantages is the lack of significant downtime.

Most patients can return to their normal routine immediately after treatment.

The results also build gradually, which makes Laser Genesis particularly appealing to patients who want their skin to improve without an obvious “I just had something done” period.

What if redness is my biggest concern?

Both treatments may have a role depending on what kind of redness we're looking at.

That's why “red skin” isn't really a diagnosis.

Visible individual vessels, rosacea, general flushing and post-inflammatory redness can all look similar when you're standing in front of the mirror, but they don't necessarily respond to exactly the same approach.

A skin assessment lets us choose based on what is actually happening rather than guessing.

Can IPL and Laser Genesis be combined?

For some patients, yes.

A treatment plan doesn't always have to pick one winner.

If you have pigmentation and redness and texture concerns, different treatments can sometimes be used strategically across a longer-term plan.

That might mean treating the most obvious concern first and then using another technology for ongoing skin quality and maintenance.

The important bit is the order.

More treatments do not automatically mean better results.

Why September is a good time for a skin consultation

Summer can leave behind more than a tan.

By September, patients often start noticing:

  • New pigmentation

  • Uneven tone

  • Redness

  • Dehydration

  • Rougher texture

It's a good time to assess what summer actually did to your skin and plan your fall treatments properly.

You don't necessarily need to start with the strongest treatment available.

You need the treatment that matches the problem.
